Whatever you want to call them, AMD's next-generation GPUs are promising big performance and efficiency gains, along with feature parity with Nvidia in terms of ray tracing support.

Will Team Red finally take the pole position in our GPU hierarchy and lay claim to the crown for the best graphics cardor will the Nvidia Ampere architecture cards keep the top spots?

It's perhaps too soon to say, but here's everything we know about Big Navi, including the RDNA 2 architecture, potential performance, expected release date and pricing. There are various ways of looking at the Nvidia Ampere launch.

The RTX and appear to be priced aggressively, and demand right now is very high. Frankly, AMD would have likely benefitted if it could have launched Big Navi already, but it has a lot of other balls it's juggling like Zen 3. We've done our best to sort fact from fiction, but even without hard numbers from AMD, we have a reasonable idea of what to expect. Every generation of GPUs is built from a core architecture, and each architecture offers improvements over the previous generation.

It's an iterative and additive process that never really ends. RDNA 2 looks to double down on those improvements in late First, a quick recap of RDNA 1 is in order. The instruction set is the same, but how those instructions are dispatched and executed has been improved. RDNA also adds working support for primitive shaders, something present in the Vega GCN architecture that never got turned on due to complications. Perhaps the most noteworthy update is that the wavefronts—the core unit of work that gets executed—have been changed from being 64 threads wide with four SIMD16 execution units, to being 32 threads wide with a single SIMD32 execution unit.

SIMD stands for Single Instruction, Multiple Data; it's a vector processing element that optimizes workloads where the same instruction needs to be run on large chunks of data, which is common in graphics workloads. This matching of the wavefront size to the SIMD size helps improve efficiency.

How much do these changes matter when it comes to actual performance and efficiency? On paper, Radeon VII looks like it should come out with an easy victory. In practice, across a dozen games that we've tested, the RX XT is slightly faster at p gaming and slightly slower at p. That's a very impressive showing, and while TSMC's 7nm FinFET manufacturing process certainly warrants some of the credit especially in regards to powerthe performance uplift is mostly thanks to the RDNA architecture.

Of course, there's another way to read things. RDNA 2 could be up to 1. That's pretty much what Nvidia is saying with its 1. That will bring AMD up to feature parity with Nvidia. If you're not familiar with the term BVH, it stands for Bounding Volume Hierarchy and is used to efficiently find ray and triangle intersections; you can read more about it in our discussion of Nvidia's Turing architecture and its ray tracing algorithm.

We don't know how much ray tracing hardware is present, or how fast will it be. Nvidia for example says it doubled the performance of its RT cores in Ampere. There are at least a few rumors or hints that Big Navi might not even have RT cores as such, but instead use some optimized shader logic and large caches to boost RT shader calculations.The technology has been part of rumors for a while now but Videocardz states that they have received confirmation regarding the implementation of the said feature in the upcoming Radeon RX series cards.

Speculation regarding Infinity Cache began a while ago when the first specifications started to leak out for the Radeon RX series lineup. RedGamingTech speculated that AMD could introduce its new Infinity Cache technology to assist with bandwidth given the smaller bus interfaces that the RX series are expected to adopt.

Videocardz has not only received a confirmation of a smaller sized yet fast cache available on RDNA 2 GPUs but also found a trademark of the technology which was registered a couple of days ago. Its likely that AMD's Infinity cache would assist in pumping out higher bandwidth to the GPUs so that they aren't virtually starved out given their smaller bus interface and standard memory bandwidth compared to the competition.

At the same time, a secondary cache in the form of Infinity Cache can help assist with even higher bandwidth which would leverage performance in games and professional applications in higher-res gaming. The technology does sound promising and something to look forward to but we have to wait and see whether its real or not because we also heard rumors of brand new tech for Ampere cards too Traversal Coprocessor prior to the launch which turned out to be inaccurate.

Fans have been promised that many times before, though, and AMD has never quite managed it. But this time could be different. Like its successive generations of high-performance Ryzen processorsAMD has committed to a regular release of new graphical hardware. That manifested as an improvement in power efficiency as much as it did in raw performance. With no huge need to cut back on the power draw of its high-end cards, RDNA 2 could deliver a big boost to raw graphical performance in the high-end cards.

According to AMD, the major advances in this generation of GPU will come through improvements in instructions per clock, an enhancement of its logic — which streamlines the design through reducing complexity — and enhanced clock speeds.

Some of this will be enabled through a new, advanced 7nm process node. Previous generations of GCN were constricted to a maximum of 64 CU and, therefore, a maximum of 4, steam processors. If the rumors of what Big Navi can do are true, however, it could well give Nvidia a lot of trouble. A high-end desktop GPU would likely be substantially faster again than either of these consoles, lending more credence to the idea that the Navi 21 GPU would be something quite special.

Navi 22 may be a Mac-exclusive mobile part, too. RDNA 2 will change that. We do know its new-gen cards will support variable rate shading, though. That allows developers to render games at their highest fidelity where they believe the player is looking, lowering detail elsewhere to save on overhead. Posted by Dribble - Tue 06 Oct Sounds like something to compensate for missing memory bandwidth, I worry it would need per game optimisations to work well. If so reminds me a bit of Fury cards which had similar problems but the other way around - massive bandwidth but short of total memory.

At the time AMD stuck some engineers on optimising benchmark favourites so they looked good, but that was only a short term sticking plaster that fell off as the card aged.AMD has recently announced that it will unveil its Radeon RX series lineup on October 28th so based on that, we can expect several graphics cards within the lineup.

The one leaked within the benchmarks may just be one of them and not exactly the fastest variant.

With that said, the graphics card features a score between points at the 4K resolution using the Crazy graphics preset. The graphics card delivers an average of around 60 FPS in the game. We don't know the overclocking potential of AMD's upcoming cards but it looks like we will be getting more specifications in the coming month. Based on that, it is highly likely that we are looking at the results of Navi 22 GPU.

Another thing to keep in mind is that these are still early performance tests and as launch comes closer, we will be looking at an even higher performance with better-tuned drivers for the cards. The leaker who posted the picture mentioned that it housed the "Big Navi" GPU but once again, we aren't sure if he's referring to Navi 21 or Navi First and foremost is the performance per watt increase which is due to a number of reasons.

The new process node itself increases transistor efficiency on the new GPUs while decreasing its overall size, allowing AMD to cram more performance in a much smaller package.

With the launch of the new consoles from Microsoft and Sony imminent, AMD is going to work to provide these features with its own optimization framework to developers for integration within next-generation gaming titles.

AMD's approach to ray tracing is to offer simplified development and speedy adopting and that is definitely possible through consoles where the mass majority of game developers focus their efforts towards. The same was stated during the presentation in which it was stated that the "Navi 2x" lineup would scale from top to bottom and as the name suggests, would deliver twice the performance efficiency increase over the first-generation RX graphics cards.

These are some bold claims by AMD, but if those rumored specifications are anything to go by, then these claims may not be that far fetched. So, are we going after 4K, and going to similarly disrupt 4K?

Absolutely, you can count on that. The competition however from the other side won't just go eyes closed as AMD launches its high-performance graphics cards.
